MG 2012 Concours in Dillard GA saw my second Top Point award. Within NAMGBR the top point concours car became known as The Don Hayter Top Point Award. Named after the chief designer of the MGB none other than Don Hayter. As I always do, I drove the car to and from the event. My 1977 MGB is no trailer queen yet did very well in the various concours competitions of NAMGBR.
The field of competitors was not all that strong. A number of cars were persuaded to participate in Concours during the event. As I discovered in my first attempt at Concours, if you don’t come prepared you will loose points. As an easy example, the owners manual. People don’t normally keep that in their car.
Other than cleaning, cleaning and more cleaning I made just minor changes to prepare for MG 2012 Concours. I did bring along and swapped in the Radio and 8-track tape player which were original for the 1977 MGB Special. Removal of the headlamp guards. This was noted as a not original item at MG 2011 Concours and was another change made.
NAMGBR Event Summary
After each NAMGBR annual convention there would be a write up in the club’s magazine about the entire event and the Concours competition. For 2012 see below and the article confirms the 953 points I was able to achieve in the MG 2012 Concours event. This was a great result and I was very proud to collect the “Top Point” award for a second year in a row. As the judges change each year the points awarded also change given the various views and criteria being applied by each set of judges.

Judging Concepts
There are 3 categories of inspection by teams of 2 judges for each of these elements:
- Technical Inspection, and exterior and boot quality and condition
- Engine bay, wheels & undercarriage and interior quality and condition
- Originality of the body/exterior, MG badges and decals, interior and the engine compartment and undercarriage
So for each event there are 6 judging sheets.
Judging Sheets
After the event competitors receive their judging sheets. Unfortunately I never received the sheets for MG 2012 so the details of the scoring is a complete mystery..

The urgent front brake pad replacement happened at MG 2012 Concours. On the morning of an organized drive to run the Tail of the Dragon stretch of US 129 I replaced front brake pads for the first time ever on a MGB (or any car). The pictures were used to write up a knowledge base article on the process I learned just in time.
I’ve built this website and spent time on the knowledge base to bring together a lot of information I have collected from around the internet. The intent is making it easy to find rather than having to know about and have skills with search engine query terms to get what you were looking for. Please make use of the knowledge base.
