So, here’s another little catch up – not much activity while I await the vent tubes that I have since ordered from Tony (autoist) to arrive. Until we have that resolved there’s no way to put the dash back.
Carbs & Filters
Today I put on the swanky new K&N air filters. Got myself some bolts down at Sears and at least at first found a less than optimal way to put on the first filter. Had to backup and start again but they’re installed now and look pretty good and the car still runs sweet. I have finally taken some video of the car running nicely on the SUs after John’s work to tune them a couple of Mondays ago. I thought it wise to get the filters on. Here’s the video:
I then turned my attentions to some smaller but necessary tasks. Trying to deal with everything possible behind the dash.
Windshield Washer Jets
Well not sure how often these will ever get used but while the dash it out I can check them out. I have installed new main hose through to the engine bay as I found that at Lowe’s fairly easy. The T piece and smaller tubing to the actual jets seemed OK and I could find any that small to replace it. It didn’t seem brittle anyway so fingers crossed.
The actual jets themselves did not appear to be aligned correctly and closely inspection of the jet hole made me thing that they may have been reversed. I have since switched them around and found the only way to get to the driver side one was to remove the defroster vent connection to get at it. Since they look right now I check and one was blocked so I am glad I took them out now. Quite hard to tighten back and keep the right angle to the screen when you’re on your own.
Turn Signals (Indicators) & Hazard Lights
I had bought some new flasher units from AutoZone the other day (they also carry Champion spark plugs RN9YC) but it turns out I already had a couple of flasher units in my various parts that came with the car. Some messing around with these had everything working but some odd behavior with the passenger side lights with hazard operations. Using my wiring diagram I traced it back to the green/white wire and it was a bad connection or terminal on the hazard switch. Quite pleased with myself for that bit of detective work!
Wiper Mounts
These were on but there was no rubber grommet under them and also I had new chrome nuts for them in my bunch of bits. Carefully removed these and put in the rubber seal/washer and used the new chrome nuts to secure them. Another nice little touch.
Battery Hold Down
Well also in the bunch of bits was a battery hold down kit. I think it’s meant for the 6 volt originals and I have a 12V conversion with a group 26R dropped in there. Didn’t really see how to hook it up the way I would expect and no holes on the battery box for the hooks that I expected. So I ran the hold bar through the middle, front to back, and manage to get the hooks to hold to the under side of the box – seems to work anyway.
So that was about it for today. I have since loaded the car back on the trailer for another Monday night group therapy session. Main items will be to see if we can rivet on the VIN plate on the dash top and figure out how to fix on the vent control mechanism to the dash.

I’ve built this website and spent time on the knowledge base to bring together a lot of information I have collected from around the internet. The intent is making it easy to find rather than having to know about and have skills with search engine query terms to get what you were looking for. Please make use of the knowledge base.
