So much got looked at tonight I almost don’t know where to start – a wonderful bunch of SLIMEy assistance!
Carbs & Distributor
The team took a car that was barely firing and turned it into a roaring fire breathing dragon. Checked the carb setup and adjusted the spark plugs. Got the mixture set and then we focused on timing and also the distributor. It turned out that the vacuum advance wasn’t working as the dizzy weights were frozen so off came the dizzy for some points checking and working to free weights – all a great insight and education for me as I had not seen this stuff before. Also did a quick valve check and that seemed OK.
Checked and adjusted both carbs again once dizzy was working and then fine tuned the idle and the linkage to make sure they are pulling together. Idles nicely at 850 and starts immediately and shuts down cleanly.
Alternator
Another team where checking the alternator while the carbs were being worked on and it seems that this is not working correctly – no charge back to the battery. Might be just a regulator but not sure – I am thinking I might go the AutoZone route and just get a replacement. We’ll see.
General review of the car confirms that some pretty nice work had been done and a nice job on new floor panels. Some of the patch scratches are pretty deep and there is just a little bit of paint bubbling at the rear of each outer sill – otherwise pretty good. Only other odd think is the very front of the hood seems to be bent/out of alignment a bit – never noticed before tonight but haven’t had it out in the daylight with the hood down really. That’s about it really – a safe tow there and back and it was a real pleasure to drive the car off the tow dolly and up into the garage. Will try and add a small video later of the new HIF4’s making her roar!
