So, it seems I have missed a couple of nights of reports.
Exhaust
Wednesday, I went 12 rounds with the exhaust fittings as I had a new mid section hanging bracket to install (just by the wheel arch). It looked as though the VB part I got wasn’t quite put together straight and sure enough it made for a lengthy install to get everything back together. That combined with the front clamps I had received being way too big in diameter for the exhaust made Wednesday not extremely productive.
Alternator
Thursday wasn’t much better either. I collected my new alternator from AutoZone having ordered the 43amp ACR model as that’s what the casing of the existing part said. All the more odd because at AutoZone the old tested OK as well but it certainly wasn’t illuminating the ignition light. Well, I should have known better as the connector on the wiring harness wasn’t going to fit the new 43amp alternator. So, I returned that one and ordered the 36 amp one that’s appropriate for the 72. Still at least it’s $30 cheaper.
No activity for Saturday but a fair amount of activity today although physically there’s not much to show for it.
I started off by getting the alternator installed. I wired it quickly and got the dash light to work with it connected so I proceeded to install it. As with my previous AutoZone alternator I found the mounting points had an extra piece extending it on the wrong side of the mount. So as before a hack saw took care of that. Since I didn’t have an impact wrench I made the trip back to AZ and they took care of things for the fan and nut install – they’re very helpful at my local store.
Once I had that installed I check the battery reading and sure enough that solved things and I’m getting between 13.75 and 14v at the battery – good.
Wiring Harness
Then I decided that the wiring was pretty much OK and proceed to bolt it in to the clamps in the trunk and underneath. I also dealt with the front and engine bay clamps so that’s all pretty neat now – I even have dealt with the cross member and firewall grommets.
Bonus Stuff
I also have dealt with the rear chrome strips and got the right rear bolted at the back and got the left rear installed and bolted up. I tried to get what I needed for the rear license plate holder at Sears but couldn’t find anything to manage the rubber spacers.
BTW – it still fires up and sounds pretty nice but I think there are some exhaust leaks – certainly at the first join from the down pipe to the rest of the system – it’s only clamped rather than welded so can probably take care of this at some point.
Last thing I did was to put on some new reversing lamp lenses – they look nice.

I’ve built this website and spent time on the knowledge base to bring together a lot of information I have collected from around the internet. The intent is making it easy to find rather than having to know about and have skills with search engine query terms to get what you were looking for. Please make use of the knowledge base.
