Interior Work Begins

“The MG Doc” also helped me get started on the interior of the 72. This was just the jolt I needed because I wasn’t quite sure where to start. With some guidance we got started and worked with both the sound deadening and carpet kits that I got when I bought the car.

Carpet & Sound Deadening

We started with the sills and then moved on to the front firewall and front tunnel covers. Some decisions about which way round the sound deadening should go had to be made. Most bits should be in with the paper side facing out/up per this post on MG Experience.

However, I did find that a couple of the front firewall panels had to go on the other way around – they just didn’t fit other wise. For glue I was using a can of 3M “77”. We also completed the rear piece with the tunnel arch piece in the middle and then called it quits for the day.

Today I continued with the interior and man its amazing how some carpet can make the car look completely different. Next I glued down the main tunnel carpet and used John’s tip of making the holes in the carpet for the seat belt mounts.

Tip – when you need to put carpet around the seat belt mounts get it in position and then use a hammer and bang quite hard on the edge of the surround for the seat belt mount. This cuts the carpet and you can then trim up – amazing tip

Then I moved on to the floor pans and did front and rear of both sides. I also found it easy enough to mark the floor holes for the seat bolts. The rear ones I stabbed up from underneath and the front ones I positioned and stabbed through from above. I then stuck in bolts to keep the positions.

Cockpit Back Panel

My last work was on the rear panel at the back of the cockpit. I put in the sound deadening panel and then managed to get the actual rear panel into place. I ended up messing around with this a bit because the sound deadening piece is quite thick. I ended up pulling the panel back out and trimming the deadening piece some more and I think I have this about right. For now I have not removed the backing paper to stick the panel to the deadening piece. Not sure if this is necessary and would make the later removal pretty hard. Will save that thought for another day. A very good weekend of progress.
