The SU HIF Carburetor starts service with model year 1972 MGBs. For UK and perhaps other markets, these carburetors remain in service through 1980. For USA specification cars the 1975 model and onwards have the single Zenith Stromberg carburetor. These cars also use the combined single intake/exhaust manifold.
I have been able to obtain a number of original original dealer aids. During scanning I apply optical character recognition (OCR). This makes the PDF scans searchable.
This is a Dealer Aid created by British Leyland to support the technicians at dealerships. It explains how the SU HIF Carburetor works in great detail and how it differs from the SU HS Carburetors. The original HS carburetors were used on MGBs from the launch in 1962.
My experience with the SU HIF Carburetor setup has been good. Some parts are different between front and rear, this can cause confusion. But a well setup set of SU HIF Carburetors run well and typically need little adjustment. So the fact that the floats are hard, if not impossible, to inspect while on the car should not be a problem.
The other great thing with these British Leyland dealer aids is you get information from the original source. There’s often an amount of urban legend around carburetors, dare I say also some urban myth. So this should help clarify any questions you may have. As always, these supplement the official workshop manuals. Enjoy learning more about the SU HIF Carburetor.
I’ve built this website and spent time on the knowledge base to bring together a lot of information I have collected from around the internet. The intent is making it easy to find rather than having to know about and have skills with search engine query terms to get what you were looking for. Please make use of the knowledge base.
